Here are the restaurants and other food facilities that Riverside County Department of Environmental Health inspectors temporarily shut down because of imminent health hazards between May 13 and 19, 2022. If no reopening date is mentioned, the department had not listed that facility as reopened as of this publication.

New Bombay Store, 1385 W. Blaine St., Riverside (partial closure)

Additionally, health inspectors conducted an unpermitted roadside vending operation in San Jacinto on May 14 and shut down three unpermitted taco stands. According to a department spokesperson, none had potable water so they couldn’t wash hands or equipment, and all had food at unsafe temperatures, flies landing on food and food from unapproved sources. Additionally, the one at Sanderson and Cottonwood avenues had meat that was spoiled and slimy. The locations were:

Here are selected inspections at facilities that weren’t closed but had significant issues.

Olivia’s Mexican Restaurant, at 9447 Magnolia Ave. in Riverside, was inspected May 19 and received a failing grade of 80/B with three critical violations. There were some flies in the kitchen that were landing on food. Multiple containers of chile verde and rellano sauce had been at unsafe temperatures too long. Also, dishes were being washed without hot water. Among the seven other violations, equipment, walls and floors needed cleaning.

The 7-Eleven at 3155 N. Case Road in Perris was inspected May 17 and received a failing grade of 73/C with three critical violations. The inspector saw rodent droppings under the coffee island, near cups and on the floor, and told the store to immediately discontinue coffee service and call pest control. There were also droppings and gnawed-on boxes by the dumpster. Also, dishes weren’t being sanitized, and some mini tacos, buffalo wings and chicken strips weren’t being kept hot enough. Among the 10 other violations, the store’s water was not quite hot enough, the soda fountain ice chute was dirty enough that the inspector said to stop using the machine until it was cleaned, the person in charge didn’t know warewashing procedures and the restroom needed cleaning.

The R Burgers at 5980 Van Buren Blvd. in Riverside was inspected May 17 and received a failing grade of 80/B with two critical violations. Food was at unsafe temperatures in two coolers that were impounded for not keeping cold. Also, an employee didn’t wash hands. Among the 10 other violations, a long prep table was blocking the only handwashing sink. The restaurant passed a mandatory follow-up inspection May 19 with a score of 96/A. One of the coolers that had been impounded hadn’t been fixed but was still in use, with food at unsafe temperatures inside.

Poly Mex Food & Restaurant, at 4038 Park Ave. in Riverside, was inspected May 17 and received a failing grade of 80/B with one critical violation. Cooked meat was at an unsafe temperature after being left at room temperature to thaw and then put in a cooler. Among the 12 other violations, there were two dead roaches in the metal insert where clean dishes were stored and two rodent droppings in the customer area, dirty equipment had been stored as if clean throughout the facility, two sinks didn’t have hot water and the floors were dirty. The restaurant now faces an administrative hearing because of repeated issues, including failing an inspection in 2020 and being shut down because of cockroaches in December.

Cook Street Market, at 42150 Cook St. Suite A in Palm Desert, was inspected May 17 and received a failing grade of 81/B with two critical violations. Food including ceviche, shrimp cocktail, tuna salad, potato salad and chicken salad was at unsafe temperatures in the salad display case, which was impounded for not keeping cold, and was being used even though the owner knew it hadn’t been working. Also, sanitizer wasn’t being used to wash dishes or wipe down surfaces. Among the 10 other violations, the floor needed cleaning and only three of 13 employees had food handler cards.

Mariscos Mi Lindo Apatzingan, at 10529 Hole Ave. in Riverside, was inspected May 16 and received a failing grade of 80/B with two critical violations. Food was at unsafe temperatures in the walk-in cooler, which was impounded for not keeping cold. Also, the only handwashing sink and the food-prep sink didn’t have hot water, but the manager turned the hot water back on before the inspection ended. Among the nine other violations, there were some flies inside.

Krazy Greek Burgers, at 10501 Hole Ave. in Riverside, was inspected May 16 and received a failing grade of 80/B with three critical violations. Some food was at unsafe temperatures, including raw hamburger in a cooler that was impounded for not keeping cold. Employees didn’t wash hands after cracking eggs and working the cash register. And some other food was contaminated by the employee who’d cracked the eggs. Among the eight other violations, a cutting board was cracked and badly scored, and the floors needed cleaning.

This list is published online on Fridays. Any updates as restaurants are reopened will be included in next week’s list.

All food facilities in the county are routinely inspected to ensure they meet health codes. A facility loses four points for each critical violation — and may have to close if the violation can’t be corrected immediately — and one or two points for minor violations. An A grade (90 to 100 points) is passing. Grades of B (80 to 89 points) and C (79 or below) are failing and typically require the proprietor to make improvements and be re-inspected.
