Blackmagic today released a new update to its popular video editing software DaVinci Resolve, which can be used on multiple platforms, including macOS. In the Mac version of the application, the company has added full support for Apple's new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The developers said that it runs five times faster on the new MacBook Pro.

Earlier this year, DaVinci Resolve updated its support for M1 Mac, which has greatly improved the performance of the application.

Although applications that use M1 to support updates do not need to be updated again to run locally on the recently released M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, developers can let their applications take full advantage of the more powerful CPU and GPU in these chips.

Today’s update to DaVinci Resolve does just that, because it now supports hardware acceleration of the Apple ProRes codec-which is unique to the new Apple chip. As a result, Blackmagic stated that DaVinci Resolve now runs five times faster on the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, even when editing 8K video.

Early benchmark results of the new MacBook Pro showed that the graphics performance of the M1 Max chip was 181% higher than the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro, making the new laptop comparable to iMac Pro and other desktops equipped with dedicated GPUs.

In addition to supporting the new chip, DaVinci Resolve 17.4 now also provides native HDR and 120Hz video playback for MacBook Pro users in 2021. This update also adds native Dropbox integration, an improved 3D keyer, and enhanced compatibility with macOS Monterey.
