KALAHANDI: In 2006, when Krushna Nag started farming on 2.5 acres of ancestral land in Sanchegaon village in Kalahidi Golamunda neighborhood, he had to face the dual problems of drought and hard soil.

Today, due to the diversification of crops-from rice cultivation to gardening, fish farming and livestock raising, he earns 1.8 million rupees a year from the same land.

The 48-year-old progressive farmer said that the journey of the past ten years has not been easy.

"It was the correct use of agricultural technology, government programs, water and fertilizers that changed my destiny in this drought-prone area," he added.

Before he decided to engage in agriculture, his father used to grow rice on the land. "But the income is never enough to support the family," says Krushna, who started planting mango trees in 2006-07 with the help of his gardening mission.

As the results take time, he decides to plant vegetables between trees next year, but irrigation is a major obstacle.

"My wife and I used to carry large water containers to water the plants. A year later, we managed to drill a shallow well, which helped us intercropping and planting vegetables on 1,000 square meters of land. This gave us 230,000 rupees. In return," he recalled.

Krushna is satisfied with the profit, focusing on growing vegetables and simultaneously developing poultry and fish farming by digging two farm ponds.

With the improvement of agricultural savings, Krushna received a 10-ton cold storage room and a tomato grader in 2013, and received subsidies from the horticultural mission.

He currently grows vegetables on 6 acres, 1,800 bananas on 1.5 acres, and 2.5 acres of rice.

"With the help of government plans and farm innovations, I managed to grow a variety of vegetables and fruits on my land. The fish ponds and poultry farms also received good returns. A year ago, I also installed an egg Incubator," Krushna said.

In order to grow vegetables, he collected cow dung from 60 tractors from the entire area and used it as fertilizer. For other crops, he uses organic fertilizers and chemical fertilizers.

Since Krushna has created a niche market for himself in terms of the quality of vegetables and poultry, he has obtained buyers from neighboring areas and Chhattisgarh.

Because of his innovative agricultural technology, he was praised by Krushi Vigyan Kendra of Kalahidi and farmers from other countries. Agricultural officials visited his farm to learn about his planting and farm management methods.

He was also appointed as the chief trainer of farmers by the Ministry of Agriculture.
