A tie-in promo for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from Tide features a subtle nod to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2.

The promo sees Benedict Wong’s Wong dirtying the Cloak of Levitation with his much-loved tuna melt sandwich. He then opens a portal to the washing machine in the Sanctum Sanctorum’s undercroft in hopes of cleaning up his mess before Doctor Strange returns. The cloak, however, has other ideas and escapes into the streets outside. As it weaves its way through New York, collecting more mess, it flies straight into a pizza truck bearing the name Joe’s Pizza Parlor. Spider-Man 2 saw Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker working for Joe’s Pizza.

Both Spider-Man 2 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are directed by Sam Raimi, so this Easter egg is a fun nod to the director’s previous Marvel work. In Spider-Man 2, Joe’s Pizza is even based on Bleecker Street, the same street as where Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum is based. This was possibly a deliberate reference to Marvel’s Master of the Mystic Arts by Raimi, who has admitted Doctor Strange is his favorite Marvel superhero – one he referenced even more obviously in Spider-Man 2 when J. Jonah Jameson was fishing for a tabloid nickname for Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock.

There has been much fan speculation over whether Tobey Maguire could return as Peter Parker yet again in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As well as sharing a director with Maguire’s Spider-Man series, the Doctor Strange sequel follows on from Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s exploration of the multiverse, which saw Maguire reprising his role alongside Andrew Garfield’s and Tom Holland’s Spider-Men. While a fun Easter egg in a Tide promo is far from confirmation of anything, it’s sure to fuel speculation amongst fans.

Here is the synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:

The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, the Marvel movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, and Patrick Stewart.
