In recent days, the concrete part of the large Prospect Mountain improvement project area in Binghamton has been demolished.

New York State Department of Transportation spokesperson Scott Cook said that some concrete slabs near the intersection of Highway 17/Interstate 81 had cracks.

The DOT engineer who reviewed the problem decided that the concrete part needed to be replaced.

Cook said the development of crack conditions is "not uncommon."

In the work area where the problematic concrete part was demolished, a series of lane closures appeared.

Some motorists were surprised to find that the excavation area was reopened within a short period of time, with new concrete parts in place.

Cook said that in some cases, precast concrete slabs were installed. In other places, poured concrete is used. The poured material solidified in approximately 24 hours.

The cost of concrete replacement work was not disclosed.
