Some questions finally have answers. The identity of the person who died while detained in the Berkshire County Correctional Facility has been confirmed.

According to a media statement from the Berkshire District Attorney's Office, the Chief Forensic Medical Office confirmed that people who died while in custody in the Berkshire County Correctional Facility committed suicide.

State police are investigating the death of Adams' 34-year-old Stavrianka on Sunday, November 7, 2021. Members of the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office discovered that Yanka was unresponsive in his cell at about 4:30 pm. Correctional officers called 911 and tried to take life-saving measures.

The county ambulance transported Yanka to Berkshire Medical Center, where the doctor announced that he was dead. On Monday, the chief forensic examiner's office took over Yanka's body and performed an autopsy. It was determined that the cause of death was suffocation and the method of death was suicide.

In a media statement, District Attorney Andrea Harrington said this:

During this very difficult time, I would like to express my condolences to Mr. Yanka’s family and friends. I thank the staff of the Correctional Service for their response and efforts to save Mr. Yanka's life, as well as the investigation of the matter by the State Police Detective Team. I hope anyone who might have suicidal thoughts knows that someone cares and supports you, and will help you.

The Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office scheduled Yanka to enter the facility on Thursday, November 4, 2021, after Adams police arrested him for night intrusion and intrusion felony.

When Adams police arrested him, Yanka was awaiting trial for the alleged assault and assault on family members. The court ordered Yanka to be detained because he violated the conditions of his release on pending matters during Friday’s interrogation.

Members of the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office reported that when Yanka entered the facility, staff performed mental health and medical examinations on him and did not show a high risk of harming herself.

The investigation remains open. The Berkshire State Police Detective Team assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts Police Crime Scene Service Division, and the Berkshire District Attorney are still reviewing video surveillance, incident reports, other evidence, and related information. Personnel conduct formal interviews.
