Public Records: Marion County restaurant inspections

The following restaurant inspections with critical violations were conducted by Marion Public Health between July 1 and July 18:

• McDonalds Corporation #2217, 1600 Marion-Mt. Gilead Road, Marion, July 7. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging, and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed no lid on condiments being used on the sandwich-make line during the time of inspection. Improper use of time as a public health control – four hours (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed improper time stamps on lettuce, tomato, and dehydrated onions on the sandwich make line. Person in charge (PIC) disposed of items and remade time stamps. 

• Wendy’s #21, 1165 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion, July 12. Food contact surfaces not easily cleanable (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed cutting board to have large gashes in it.  PIC replaced it with a better-quality cutting board. 

• McDonalds # 5511, 483 N. Main St., Marion, July 12. Employees are not informed in a verifiable manner of their responsibility to report information about their health (critical). Did not observe a signed employee health policy to be on file. Have signed by staff by July 15. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed wraps in the walk-in cooler and reach-in cooler to be improperly date marked. PIC disposed of them. Ready-to-eat, TCS food not properly discarded when required (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed muffins to be held past their disposition date. PIC disposed of them. 

• Burger King Restaurant #1057, 1278 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion, July 12. Improper use of time as a public health control – four hours (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed TCS food items to not have a time stamp on them.  

• Belly Busters Pizzeria, 123 E. Main St., Waldo, July 12. Food in contact with an unclean surface or linens (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed ice scoop handle being stored in ice tray.  

• Dugout Pizza, 116 E. Marion St., Caledonia, July 13. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed dented can on the shelf. PIC stated they would remove it from the other cans and return it for credit. 

• Marion Manor Nursing Home, 195 Executive Drive, Marion, July 14. PIC unable to demonstrate knowledge by having no critical violations (critical, corrected during inspection). PIC received critical violations for several items during the time of inspection. PIC and employees were able to correct critical violations. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed several dented cans. PIC removed cans from shelves to return to seller. Food package(s) received in poor condition (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed a cracked egg in the cooler. PIC disposed of egg. Equipment food-contact surfaces or utensils are unclean (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed area in ice machine that ice touches to have build-up on the surface. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed several food items in cooler to not have date marks on them past the 24 hour time period. Ready-to-eat, TCS food not properly discarded when required (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed tomato soup being held past its disposition date. PIC disposed of it. 

• Rally’s #4054, 412 N. Main St., Marion, July 15. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed no lids on crunchy onions and bacon bits on the make-line. PIC places lids on ingredient products. 

Food ingredients should be covered when not in use for the purpose of making food. 

• DeWolfe Place, 1140 Wilson Ave., Marion, July 18. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed juice with improper dates on it. PIC stated juice had been prepared that morning and the dates were improperly placed on the container. PIC disposed of juice. 

• Carlyle's Restaurant, 1116 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion, July 18.  Food contact surfaces not easily cleanable (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed spatulas to have cracks in them that make them no longer smooth and easily cleanable. PIC got rid of them. 

• Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken, 571 E. Center St., Marion, July 18. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed leftover chicken in walk-in cooler to not have a date on it. PIC disposed of chicken. Working containers of poisonous or toxic materials not properly labeled (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed four bottles of unknown cleaning substances to not have their common name on the working container.
